Chennai's SPR City Unveils 47.8 Foot Golu

Chennai’s SPR City Unveils 47.8 Foot GoluChennai's festive tourism scene has gained a major attraction with SPR City in Perambur unveiling a 47.8-foot-tall Golu featuring more than 4,500 dolls for Navaratri Utsavam 2026.
The installation combines traditional South Indian festive customs with a large-scale cultural display, inviting residents, families and visitors to experience one of Tamil Nadu's most cherished celebrations.

The Golu exhibition opened on October 11 and will remain accessible to visitors until October 20, coinciding with the nine nights of Navaratri and Vijayadashami.
The installation is also a world record attempt for the tallest Golu, in association with the World Book of Records, London. The recognition remains subject to official verification.

A Cultural Attraction Inspired by Chennai's Skyline

The display's 47.8-foot height draws inspiration from SPR City's 47-floor residential tower. More than 4,500 dolls represent different aspects of Indian culture, traditions, stories and humanity, transforming the traditional arrangement of festive figurines into a large visitor attraction.

Golu, also known as Bommai Golu or Kolu, is a traditional Navaratri display in which dolls and figurines are arranged on tiered steps. Common themes include Hindu deities, mythological stories, weddings, village life and everyday activities. Families traditionally invite friends and relatives to view their displays, making the practice an important part of community celebrations.

At SPR City, the scale of the installation offers visitors an opportunity to experience this tradition in a public setting. The event also includes daily poojas, cultural programmes, music and family-oriented activities throughout the celebration.

Organisers Highlight Tradition and Human Values

Hitesh Kawad, Managing Director of SPR Group, highlighted the cultural significance behind the installation.

“Navaratri celebrates motherhood, tradition, devotion and togetherness,” said Hitesh Kawad, Managing Director, SPR Group.

He added that the 4,500-plus dolls represent different facets of humanity and the richness of Indian culture.

Navin Ranka, Director of SPR India, also emphasised the values represented by the display.

He described wealth in terms of “Harmony, Nobility and Inner Peace,” offering a perspective that goes beyond the scale of the installation itself.

Planning a Festive Visit to Perambur

For travellers exploring Chennai during Navaratri, SPR City's Golu offers an opportunity to experience regional culture alongside the city's other attractions. Visitors can combine the exhibition with local temples, traditional food experiences and other festive activities around Chennai.

The installation is located within SPR City, an integrated township in Perambur, North Chennai. Travellers can plan their visit between October 11 and 20, 2026, while checking directly with the organisers for entry arrangements, event timings and programme schedules before travelling.

By bringing thousands of traditional figurines together in a single installation, SPR City has created a distinctive seasonal attraction that celebrates Tamil Nadu's festive heritage while offering visitors a memorable cultural experience.
