Govt Announces Free Railway Travel for Gallantry Award Recipients

India has taken a landmark step to honor its bravest heroes, announcing a lifetime railway concession for gallantry medal recipients. Now, soldiers who have displayed extraordinary courage and have been awarded prestigious gallantry medals by the Army, Navy, or Air Force can travel free of cost across the Indian Railways network. This benefit extends not only to the gallantry awardees themselves but also allows one companion to accompany them, making journeys easier for these courageous individuals and their loved ones.

The railway concession for gallantry medal recipients is a heartfelt recognition of the sacrifices made by the armed forces. Recipients of the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal are eligible to enjoy travel in premium classes including First Class, 2AC, and AC Chair Car, ensuring comfort and dignity during their journeys. In the case of posthumous awards, families are not left behind-parents or spouses of the fallen heroes can avail the same benefits, with specific conditions such as spouse eligibility until remarriage and parental eligibility if the recipient was unmarried.

This initiative comes alongside a broader move by Indian Railways to support ex-servicemen and Agniveers in transitioning to civilian life through employment opportunities. Under the 'Framework of Cooperation' with the Indian Army, a structured job reservation system has been introduced. Ex-servicemen can access up to 20 percent reservation in Level-1 posts and 10 percent in higher posts, while retired Agniveers enjoy 10 percent and 5 percent reservations respectively. Recruitment is being fast-tracked, with thousands of posts already in process and nine Railway divisions collaborating closely with Army units to streamline hiring.

This dual initiative of offering free railway travel and career opportunities is more than just a benefit-it is a tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of India's armed forces.
